Mr. Justin Past grew up in Cary, IL and started playing the flute in 5th grade at Briargate Elementary school. Upon attending Cary Junior High School, he switched to the alto and baritone saxophones under the direction of Mr. Hank Tuber. Justin continued to play the saxophone both at Cary Grove High School for Mr. Marty Magnini and Mr. Patrick Whalen, and in various bands with friends. He recorded his first studio album with the original rock group Quarterlife at the age of 18, and has been on 6 other studio recordings with such groups as Maps and Atlases, The Help Desk, 3 Stacks of High Society, Colour, and Elephant Gun.
Mr. Past received his Bachelors degree in Music Education from Northeastern Illinois University. While at NEIU, he performed with their Wind Ensemble, Big Band, and in an original Jazz Combo known as Mingus Among Us, the only combo to have competed in the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 2006.
This will be his sixth year with Music Education Services. Previously, Justin had taught general music, band, and choir for two years at St. Mary Catholic School in Woodstock, IL. He also directed the school musical and started a pep band for sports assemblies.
In his free time he enjoys playing Ultimate Frisbee, disc golf, skateboarding, long boarding, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, geocaching, and swimming. Had Mr. Past not been so allergic to animals, he most likely would have been a veterinarian and a professional saxophonist on the side!
